Oakley was started by James Jannard in 1975 in his garage with a short investment of $300. The name “Oakley” originated from Jim’s English Setter, “Oakley Anne”. Jannard started out by selling what he called ‘The Oakley Grip’ out of your back of his car at motocross events. His motorcycle grips were unlike other grips offered by enough time. The material continues to be used to help make the earsocks on Oakley glasses, and several of the nose pieces and today the bands of their watches. Oakley continued to create number plates, gloves, grips, elbow guards, chin guards, and goggles for the BMX and motocross communities.
