The Garmin Foretrex 401 GPS can be an outstanding small, wrist-mounted GPS. Not long ago i wore this GPS for a 3 mile walk/jog with my daughter. As possible plainly see, the essential data you get just from using it while running or walking is fairly informative. You don’t get your pace time, but considering the rest of the information that you do have at your finger tips, and the compact size of the Garmin unit, it really is well suited for outdoor activities and adventures. The Garmin Foretrex 401 is incredibly comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even when sweating a whole lot. Basic readout from a 3.2 mile hike
The compass feature of the GPS is i’m all over this with a typical compass. Even relocating a 360 degree circle, both units were on par with one another. The Garmin Foretrex 401 compliments a typical compass and map for navigation, and provides you that added confidence in difficult terrain. The Foretrex 401 stores up to 500 waypoints and 10 tracks, and the high-sensitivity GPS chip rivals those in more costly GPS units. (For the technical specs of the GPS, please refer back again to my first impressions review.)

Garmin Foretrex 401 and Compass Comparrison
Geared more for the military, the Foretrex 401 is approximately 20 percent smaller compared to the original 101 and includes the same size backlit display. The 401’s capability to clone itself wirelessly with another 401 is pretty helpful for quickly sharing mission waypoints and routes among associates. In addition, it sports a 2-axis digital compass, and a barometric altimeter. The “Jumpmaster” function for static, HAHO and HALO jumping enables you to set data points for under-canopy guidance to an LZ. It’s got options for forward throw, windspeeds at altitude, and HARP to make you the proper place. Garmin also improved the GPS sensitivity so that it will pick up a sign faster once out of your aircraft, but it’s still best as a backup to most of your altimeter.

Other features include an electric compass, and the capability to share GPS facts wirelessly with other compatible Garmin GPS units. Expect about 12 hours average on both AAA batteries. The 1.8-inch black-and-white screen is surprisingly readable in direct sun, causeing this to be an excellent option for desert environments or any other location where you may face bright sun. Really the only downfall of the model is that you cannot store maps onto it, but that’s not necessarily what this specific model was designed for.
